Cut groundcover and low branches back from the base of trees and shrubs, and pull mulch away from crowns rather than mounding it up for insulation. Sleeve every young trunk with quarter-inch hardware cloth, set slightly into the soil and tall enough to clear the snow depth you normally get. Bark chewing usually happens above the ground line because the animals work inside the snowpack. Clear fallen fruit and spilled birdseed, which concentrate rodents into one part of a small urban lot. Finally, check the drainage before the ground freezes. Extending a downspout in October is easy work, and doing it then means the wettest corner of the yard starts the next growing season a little less inviting than it did this one.
