It helps to know what you are ruling out and why. Pocket gophers need deep, well drained soil they can excavate year round, and that requirement carves their range into two chunks of the country. One runs from the Pacific states through the interior West and out across the Great Plains. The other sits in the sandhill country of Florida and Georgia, where the southeastern species lives in soil loose enough to work like dry sugar. Tennessee is between those, and the data available for this state gives no indication of pocket gopher presence. The heavy clay that dominates much of the state is not the substrate these animals are built for. So why does everyone say gopher. What a first visit should produce
A useful first appointment is mostly looking, not treating. The person should be studying which runs are active, how deep they sit, how wide the surface paths are, and what has been chewed, and they should say a species out loud before they say a number. Watch for whether they test rather than assume. Flattening a run and rechecking it is the standard, and if nobody does that, the traps are being placed on guesswork. Then ask about the parts that are not trapping. Which trees are getting hardware cloth. Where mesh is going under beds. Whether the mulch depth and the groundcover along the fence line are working against you. On a Tennessee property with mature plantings, that protective work is frequently worth more over five years than the removal itself. One question separates a real assessment from a script. Ask them to explain how they ruled out the other animal. If the answer is confident and points to specific evidence in your yard, you are dealing with someone who does this work.
