Two gopher species, one state, very different rules
Washington is unusual in that the same common name covers a routine yard nuisance and a listed species, depending on which side of the mountains you stand. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife divides them plainly: the northern pocket gopher occupies eastern Washington, and the Mazama pocket gopher occupies the western part of the state. The Mazama is listed as state threatened, and WDFW notes that the Thurston and Pierce County subspecies became federally threatened in April 2014. South Puget Sound prairie soils are its habitat, and control there is restricted accordingly. For a Spokane homeowner, the practical takeaway is not that the listing applies to your lawn. It is that the identification step is not optional anywhere in this state, and that a provider who cannot name the species is not ready to quote. The second takeaway concerns method. WDFW's trapping guidance says a special trapping permit is required for all traps other than live traps. That rule is statewide and it is worth resolving before the first purchase, not after a trap is already in the ground.
What dry inland soil does to the search
Seventeen inches of annual rain gives Spokane a soil profile that behaves very differently from a coastal yard, and that changes how you hunt for the tunnel. Well-drained ground holds a tunnel shape well, which is good for probing and good for trap placement. It also means the animal is not forced to shift as water tables rise, so a burrow system tends to persist in one part of the property rather than migrating. That gives you a stable target. Mounds usually cluster where roots are dense and irrigation keeps the soil workable, and stay absent from dry unwatered ground a few yards away. Map the mounds first, note which side of the yard holds the fresh ones, and you have narrowed the search before you pick up a probe. Dry air also ages the evidence for you. A fresh push is dark and loose, a week-old mound has crusted. In a climate with humidity around 65 percent and long dry stretches in summer, that contrast is easy to read, and it is the difference between setting on a live run and setting on a monument.
A year in a Spokane yard, month by month
December through February looks quiet from the kitchen window. Winter lows near 23 degrees stiffen the top of the ground, so the gopher works below that layer and packs excavated soil into abandoned tunnel branches rather than pushing it to the surface. March and April deliver everything at once. As the frost releases, all that stored spoil comes up, and a lawn that seemed fine can show a dozen mounds in a week. This is the year's best trapping window, because fresh dirt is abundant and a live runway is easy to find. May through August, digging slows near the surface as the top dries out. With summer highs near 84 degrees and little rain, the animal concentrates under irrigated turf and beds. Damage shows up as plants failing rather than as new mounds, which is why people often think the gopher left. September through November is the second push. Cooler soil and autumn moisture make digging easy again, and the animal expands and caches before winter. This is also the season for barrier work: mesh under new beds, baskets on anything you plant, edging set deeper than the feeding layer.
What a proposal should say before you sign it
In a state with a permit rule attached to trapping, a quote should read differently than it would in Idaho or Oregon, and you can tell a lot from whether it does. Look for the species named explicitly, with a sentence about what evidence supports it. Look for the method, and for the authorization behind that method if it is anything other than live trapping. A company that works in Washington regularly will not find these questions surprising. Then the ordinary commercial terms. How many visits are included. What triggers an additional charge. Whether flattening mounds and reseeding the bare spots is part of the price. What happens if fresh dirt appears the week after the last visit. One more worth asking on a Spokane property: what changes so the next animal does not simply move in. A vacated burrow system in good, well-drained soil beside an irrigated lawn is prime real estate. A provider talking about watering practice, mesh under beds, and monitoring after removal is describing an outcome. One offering only a catch is describing an appointment.
Protecting a garden while the slow route runs
Whatever method you land on, removal takes time, and a vegetable bed can be stripped from below in a few days. Run protection in parallel rather than waiting. Half-inch galvanized hardware cloth is the workhorse. Lined into the bottom of a raised bed before it is filled, it takes that bed permanently out of play. For established plants, wire baskets around individual root balls protect the ones you would actually mourn, which for most people means fruit trees and a few perennials that took years to fill in. Depth is where homeowners get it wrong. Since WDFW describes feeding burrows at four to twelve inches, a barrier or edging that stops at three inches is ornamental. Set it deeper than the layer the animal is actually working. And resist the aisle of gadgets. Vibrating stakes, ultrasonic spikes, and castor granules have a long record of not working on burrowing rodents. If digging stops after you install one, the animal moved for its own reasons and the soil that suited it before will suit it again.
