How irrigation turns desert ground into gopher habitat
The low desert is not naturally generous to pocket gophers. Hard, dry, rootless soil is difficult to dig and offers little to eat, which keeps numbers low across untouched ground. Irrigation changes all three conditions at once. Water softens the soil, roots follow the water, and a continuous food supply appears at exactly the depth a gopher works. January and February are mild here, with lows around 43 degrees, so nothing shuts down. Digging continues in any zone still being watered, and this is a quietly good time to trap because activity is concentrated. March through May is the main peak. Soil is workable, roots are growing, and young animals from winter litters are dispersing and setting up their own systems. If you see mounds in two separate parts of the yard this time of year, assume two animals rather than one that moved. June through August brings highs near 105 degrees. Surface soil bakes, and activity retreats into the coolest, wettest ground on the property, which is usually the turf and the shaded beds. Damage in these months shows up as plants failing in the heat rather than as a rash of new mounds. September through November is the second window, and it is the best time to do prevention work: reset irrigation runtimes, sleeve exposed drip lines, and cage the root balls of anything you plant for the cool season. Going into winter with the water schedule corrected does more than any single trapping round.
What the damage actually costs on a landscaped property
The animal is cheap to remove. The consequences are not, and on Scottsdale properties the ratio is lopsided in a way that catches people out. Start with irrigation. A chewed lateral is a fifteen-dollar repair if you find it that week and a dead hedge if you find it in August. Quotes for burrowing rodent work rarely line up, because companies price the job on different units. One charges a setup fee plus a per-animal rate. Another charges a flat fee covering a defined period with unlimited resets. A third prices by turf square footage, which is the least informative of the three, since a single gopher maintaining a 2,000 square foot tunnel network takes the same effort whether the lawn is small or large. Ask all of them the same three things and get the answers in writing. Which species did you identify, and what did you see. How many visits does this include. What happens if fresh mounds appear after the final visit. Two Scottsdale-specific questions are worth adding. Does the price include repairing irrigation the gopher has chewed, or is that a separate trade. And if the proposal includes any restricted fumigant, why is it appropriate this close to an occupied home and a pool area.
